Sharing is caring!

Today I am sharing a super easy but beautiful Anthropologie Tea Towel knockoff with you guys!

I love a great knockoff series and some of my super talented bloggy friends and I just kicked off this new Anthropologie Knockoff Series today. So fun! Last summer we did a West Elm Knock off decor series, and we loved it so much that we decided to repeat the fun! The series will go for three months. Each month we will share a project from Anthropologie that you can replicate at home if you like. The project will be shared the last Wednesday of the month each month,  so be on the lookout for it!

Why Anthropologie?

I personally love Anthropologie. It’s unique, super stylish but to tell you the truth I think there isn’t everything priced for my wallet. You hear me, right?

The project that I tackled this time is something I’ve wanted to try for a long time.

Painting on fabric. It’s my long time dream to see some of my watercolor designs on tea towels or kitchen plates, but for some reason, I never started going down on that road. Maybe one day!

So today I will show you how I painted this tea towel which is a knockoff version of this lovely tea towel from Anthro.

So as I mentioned, I’ve never painted on fabric. Painting on fabric is not something that’s super hard  to do but of course, if you know a few things ahead, you will have more success and more fun with your project.

Here are a few useful tips before you start on your fabric painting project:

  • Fabric paint is messy, and it will show on everything it gets to. I mean EVERYTHING. Wear a glaw and protect your surafaces before starting on the project.
  • I drew the design on my fabric beforehand. If paintingrt paining your shape, flower, etc. and you screw up, the paint isn’t going to be removable. So draw a light sketch of your picture before you start painting on your fabric.
  • Have a cardboard handy. Place the cardboard under your fabric to avoid bleeding through.
  • Work in layers. After the first layer completely dry, apply the second coat to get the best coverage.
  • Let it dry for 24 hours and heat set with a hot iron to protect the fabric in the washing machine.

Now that you know all these useful tips grab your tea towel and have fun. I used an old tea towel from IKEA, simple white cotton towel. I lay the towel on a cardboard and drew a light sketch of the beautiful floral design from Anthro.

I used two different kinds of fabric paint. I loved working with the small tubes as they had a pointy end and it was super easy to draw with those pointy ends. I highly recommend those cute little bottles.

I applied the flower’s  colors with a small brush.

As you see, I went little by little on my design as I tried to copy the same painting that the Anthro towel had. It was a fun little evening project. I enjoyed it. After the painting had been done, I let it dry for 24 hours and heat set it with a hot iron. Cover your towel with another clean rag and iron it for about 3-5 minutes. Then you can wash it your design should be there without fading!

What do you think? Will you try painting on fabric?

Isn’t it pretty? It was a fun little project that turned out to be beautiful.

Of course, screen printing has a much better quality, but I was happy with the result of my handmade work.:-)
