How to purge your closet? Yes! I am going to tell you a few tips that will help you to purge your closet!
It’s January, and it seems like everyone I know is in organizing mode. Me??
Not so much. I could tell you how much I love to organize, but it would be a lie:-), Yeah, it would be! I am not an organized person. My husband knows, my mom knows but most importantly I know myself, and I am afraid that I will never be put on the ORGAZINED people’s list. Here is the problem I am facing. I have way too many things and when you have way too many things I think it is almost impossible to be organized. And I am not only talking about clothes but EVERYTHING.
Home decor, clothes, shoes, plates, accessories, jewelry…EVERYTHING!
One of the biggest challenges I had was my finding what I need in a messy and cluttered closet. Being unorganized and have clutter totally ruins your day!
The other day I was watching a movie called, Minimalist on Netflix and it truly opened my eyes. It’s a great film. If you need an eye opener, watch it!
To purge my closet was on my list for EVAH, but you know what happened every time I started the process….? Maybe I purged one small bag of clothes.I have clothes that are 4-5 years old, and I still pull them out every single time because I love them so much and I have clothes that I just recently purchased and I never pull out of the closet. Apparently; I tend to buy things because they are on sale and cheap, not because I love them. Wrong!! My husband always tells me: “Honey, you are buying to much crap”. :-))
And I say:
So Today I am going to share just a few tips that have helped me to DEEP clean my extremely cluttered closet!
It’s not a “made up” scene! No! This was my closet. Crazy, isn’t it? Why am I sharing this?
Becuase secretly, in the back of my mind I know I am not alone. If you, on the other side of the screen, perhaps have the same closet that I had, raise your hand and pat your shoulder because reading this post might be the first step in your purging process.
Well. I hear about, I saw many inspirational images on Pinterest, and yes, the capsule closet looks phenomenal. Could I have a capsule closet? I say, NO.
I love to dress creatively (I am not saying you can’t be creative with 30 pieces of clothes), but I feel that I need just a little more variety.
Ok. So here is what I did and how I purged my closet!
1. FIND THE PERFECT DAY
Purging your closet will take time. It can’t be dome in 30 minutes. Could you do it little by little? Yes, you could. But if you are like me, you like to finish up things that you start. I designated a SATURDAY when we had nothing going on ( except my son’s basketball game in the middle of day, which was just the perfect break in my purging process). So make sure you set a day for purging your closet.
2. REMOVE EVERYTHING FROM YOUR CLOSET
The first thing you want to do is to take a picture of your closet because when you are done with your purging and cleaing, seeing the difference is very rewarding!!
Then Remove everything from your closet. EVERYTHING!I threw every single piece of my clothes and shoes onto my KING SIZE bed.
3. CATEGORIZE YOUR CLOTHES
Once I had everything on my bed, I started categorizing my clothes.
- CLOTHES I LOVE ♥
- CLOTHES I HAVE NOT WEAR IN THE LAST 6 MONTHS
- CLOTHES THAT ARE SEASONAL
I had a huge pile of clothes that I kept that I still loved. Then I had a huge pile of clothes that I did not pull out of the closet for months. All of those went to an enormous 42-gallon trash bag. And I had many that were seasonal ( summer) clothes and I knew that I won’t wear them before next summer so it was just taking space in my closet for no reason.
4. ONLY PUT THE THINGS BACK TO YOUR CLOSET THAT YOU LOVE
I know it’s hard. I had a large pile of clothes that I liked and while I was putting them onto hangers I double considered all of them again and threw so much more to the trash bag.
I don’t have a beautiful and structured closet ( that’s next on the MAKEOVER list), but I was able to purge probably 70% of my clothes and shoes, and I can’t tell you how much happier I am. My mornings are great and stressless because I walk into my closet, I see every single piece I have, and I can still make my outfits creative and fun! I am one happy mama!
Now one rule I am implementing is that if I bring in a new piece, one old one has to go!
I hope you got inspired to purge your closet!!
