Hey Guys! I am a little sad today as our West Elm Knock Off Series is coming to an end. Today’s post is our final post. We kicked off this fun series in June, and we tackled 15 fantastic West Elm inspired projects together with my amazingly talented bloggy friends. If you perhaps missed seeing it you can catch up on 15 fantastic knock off decor projects at the end of this post. Today I am going to show you how quickly you can paint an accent rug. Don’t you love a great home decor without breaking the bank? Well, I do. This DIY project cost me a little less than $20. I simply painted a super inexpensive drop cloth with acrylic paint that isn’t anything genius really, but it turned out to be a cool addition to my home.:-)

I liked this rug from West Elm but what I didn’t like was its price tag. The size of rug that I was looking for was over $400.

So I made my own.

Are you ready to see how this painted rug was done?

MATERIALS NEEDED:

– EVERBILT drop cloth

– acrylic paint – different shades of brown

– fabric medium ( if you want your rug to be washable)

– painters tape

– ruler

Project time: 1 hour

I think the most time-consuming part was to tape off my drop cloth. After that, it was super easy to finish off this project with painting.

STEPS:

DIY painted rug

1. Iron your drop cloth to have a nice and smooth surface to work on.

2. Measure lines that go across the drop cloth.

The drop cloth that I used was 6′ x 9′. The length of the drop cloth was 100″. I divided the longest side by five then I measured out five lines 20″ apart.

As a first step, I taped off the areas for the orange lines that went across the drop cloth. I taped it at 19″ and at 21″ and I left 1-inch. That 1-inch area was painted with orange.

Once all my lines were taped, I painted my orange lines. I let the paint dry thoroughly.

**Be sure to add FABRIC MEDIUM mix to the PAINT if you would like the rug to be washable. **

3. Next I taped off the triangles. I started going from the middle of the 20″ section creating a triangle with my tape. I repeated this in all my sections. Some of the sections had the triangles go lengthwise. For those, I taped off my orange line first to prevent the orange line from being painted with the brown paint.

I painted my triangles with 3 three different shades of brown:

-light brown: Americana- Fawn

-medium brown: Americana – Raw Sienna

-dark brown: Americana – Dark Chocolate

I painted all the triangles that were the same color then I painted the rest of the triangles with the other two colors.

NOTE: I started painting with the roll, but that used a whole lot more paint color than the brush, so I quickly switched over to brush.

You can add this painted rug on the top of another rug, and it will make a fabulous accent rug to your home.

  1. Hello!
I really like your projects. I want to try the rug. I was wondering where you got that wonderful picture leaning up against the wall, it looks a bit like the Queen on a playing card? Did you make that too? I have a mid-century modern house and I’m looking for some great, inexpensive wall art.

    Thank you,

  2. I had no idea rugs could be painted. It turned out great! And looks nice in your space. And yes, I missed the series cause every time I try to long on here, my computer starts slowing down.. Hmmmm, any ideas why this may be so??. I love your projects!

  3. LOVE this, Aniko! I can’t believe that fabulous rug is a regular ole’ drop cloth! WOW! Thank you again for including me in this series – it was not only a ton of fun, but an honor to have been included with you talented ladies. <3
