Today I show you how to make beautiful these hand-painted CHRISTMAS ornaments. If you have been following me for a while, you know how much I love painting. My primary medium is watercolor, but I have pretty much tried all mediums already. And truly love it all. Each year I try to display something different on my Christmas tree, and I thought it would be fun to hang beautifully painted ornaments on our tree this year.

My family and I are still traveling with our camper, and I need to be mindful about what I hang on our tree. Yes, I have a Christmas tree in our trailer.

HOW TO PAINT PLASTIC ORNAMENTS

Have you ever wondered how to paint plastic ornaments? You can pick up boxed plastic ornaments at any large retail store ( like Walmart or Target) or online. Painting plastic ornaments is simple. There are a few ways to paint them. Or maybe there are more methods; I am just familiar with the following two:

  1. Paint to the inside of the clear plastic ornament by pouring the paint inside the ornaments and shaking it aroudn until the paint is smooth inside and covers the entire surface.
  2. Or the second option – which I used – is to paint the outside of the ornament. I really liked using this method to add a little bit of texture to the outside of the plastic ornament.

I used mixed surface acrylic paint that adheres to plastic, glass, and wood. It was effortless, and I loved the look of the finished ornaments.

MATERIALS YOU NEED

STEPS TO HAND PAINTED CHRISTMAS ORNAMETNS

Prepare your work table/ or area where you will proceed with the painting process.

Decide on the colors you will use beforehand, and get them ready for use.

Remove the topper from the plastic ornament and set it aside.

Have a large paintbrush to apply the base coat for the ornament. I used my finger to hold the plastic ornament in place, which helped to keep it steady.

Start painting the base color on the outside of the ornament with light brush strokes. Darker colors will need only one coat of paint, but lighter colors might need two coats. See after the first coat if you need to apply another one.

Once the ornament is painted with a base color, let it sit until it dries completely. ( I used a hairdryer to dry my ornaments which fastened the process a lot ).

Once the base coat is dry, start painting your preferred design on the ornament. I painted florals ( super easy) and Christmas trees, but the list of ideas on what to paint on your ornament is endless.

Once the design is painted, be sure to let the ornament dry before you touch the ornament.

I will demonstrate my painting process in this short video below, so be sure to watch it.
